  Background
  Son of Pope Benedict IV, Bruno the first German Pope of the Ottonians. He succeeded his father as the second German Pope of the German reformed Catholic Church to be resident in Rome.
  In 973 upon news of the death of Emperor Otto I, Pope Benedict V was captured by the returning forces of Pontifex Maximus John XII (also known as John XI and John XIII) who returned to claim his city and pagan shrine--the Phrygianum.
  He was held at the Castel Sant'Angelo and died less than a year later.
