  Background
  Pope Gregory II served as pope from May 19, 715 to his death on February 11, 731, succeeding Pope Constantine. Having, it is said, bought off the Lombards for thirty pounds of gold.
  Gregory sought early to finish off the Celtic Irish influence in Britain and Ireland.
  He is recorded as having issued the excommunication of the Byzantine emperor Leo III the Isaurian, in defiance of the Byzantine influence over Roman affairs.
  Soon after he was assassinated and honored as a "martyr" of the Catholic Faith.
