Background |
| |
A confusing history surrounds Pope Marcellinus. At first under Emperor Diocletian's reign it appears he was on civil terms. However when Diocletian began to persecute christian leaders, the history suggests St. Marcellinus renounced his christian vows and return to a purely pagan Roman liturgy. |
| |
This meant there was no effective "Pope" in Rome from at least 304 to 308 as Marcellinus became a senior pagan priest for the Emperor. |
| |
However, it appears that Marcellinus decided to renounce his pagan vows to the Emperor and returned to being Pope by 308, this time as Marcellus, a new identity. |
| |
In the short time of his reign before Emperor Diocletian had him arrested and executed, Marcellinus now as Marcellus managed to re-organize the Roman Catholic Church by dividing the Church into twenty-five districts (tituli), appointing over each a presbyter, who saw to the preparation of the catechumens for baptism and directed the performance of public penances. The presbyter was also made responsible for the burial of the dead and for the celebrations commemorating the deaths of the martyrs. |

Of publishing false documents: That Lucius Lactantius with the full knowledge and consent of Pope Marcellinus did publish his work entitled "Divinae institutiones, Book III - Of the False Wisdom of Philosophers " in which he deliberately attacked the ancient wisdom and knowledge of the Greeks and Aristotle concerning the spherical nature of planet Earth and the orbit of the planets, specifically:
"Those who defend these marvellous fictions (that the Earth is round and revolves around the Sun), why all things do not fall into that lower part of the heaven ... they have once erred, consistently persevere in their folly, and defend one vain thing by another ... they either discuss philosophy for the sake of a jest, or purposely and knowingly undertake to defend falsehoods ...
